Turning personal loss into professional purpose: Antony’s mission to help improve mental health
Antony's leadership role is driven by his personal experiences and commitment to mental health
At Lundbeck, our mission is fueled by the personal inspirations each of us brings to our collective purpose of advancing brain health and transforming lives. These connections and our shared sense of purpose are essential to our success as an organization.
Antony Wright, Senior Director, National Sales, brings a commitment to improving mental health, which is deeply rooted in personal experiences that have shaped his career and passion for the field.
Growing up in Australia, he faced the challenges of mental health within his family, particularly on his father's side. A tragic loss further ignited his commitment. Less than a year after moving to the United States at the age of 20, Antony received a shocking call from his mother — his best friend had taken his own life.
“Everything with him seemed fairly normal when I left Australia,” Antony recalled. “Everyone has ups and downs, but he had everything going for him. It threw me for a spin. It’s something that of course has stuck with me all these years later. You just don't know sometimes what people are dealing with.”
These experiences left Antony grappling with the complexities of mental health and reinforced his desire to support others. When he joined the pharmaceutical industry, he found his calling in mental health, a field that resonated deeply with him.
"I always thought I would get into this world due to my personal experiences, particularly with the passing of my best friend,” Antony said. “I just didn't know how deep I would get into the mental health space."
Antony's dedication became more apparent when his son joined the military and his daughter started high school, both settings where mental health challenges can occur.
“Mental health can affect many aspects of life,” Antony said. “It's quite confronting when you learn about the environment your children are in, and you start to really understand what they're going through.”
Antony's passion for mental health is also evident in his patient-centric approach at Lundbeck, which began 12 years ago when he joined as one of the first Regional Directors in psychiatry for Lundbeck US.
“You always want to do something where you feel like you're helping someone,” Antony recalled about joining Lundbeck. “You're having an impact somewhere. You realize that you really do have the potential to have a profound impact on people.”
He feels immense gratitude for being part of an organization whose culture and mission align perfectly with his values. Antony says he is fortunate to work alongside colleagues who share his dedication to improving mental health.
"We all have this strength and empathy,” Antony said. “Most people have some sort of connection, some deeper than others, so people really get it. When you're connected by that thread, it fortifies what you're doing. It's a powerful purpose and that underpins the Lundbeck culture."
Through his experiences, Antony clearly understands the profound impact that effective mental health treatment can have on patients, families, and communities. They have instilled in him a heightened sense of awareness and empathy, driving him to ensure that Lundbeck's work advances brain health and transforms lives.
“I've seen people that have suffered and how challenging that can be for them as individuals and their entire family,” Antony said. “When you see them going through struggles and then witness them getting better through effective treatment, the joy you get from that, you’re always conscious of it. You can see the profound difference it makes when patients are able to find the correct medication and the right balance. Even if I have a small role to play in that, it’s very rewarding.”
As he keeps his personal experiences close to his heart, Antony truly feels a sense of belonging at Lundbeck and knows that together, we are truly helping transform lives.
